Thinking about going to art school but not sure how to pick the school that’s right for you? Here are some things that you should consider when making your decision.
There are many good art schools to choose from, each offering a different style of teaching. But how do you know which style of teaching is best for you?
That depends upon whether you intend to pursue your degree in the classroom or online. Are you an outgoing, sociable person, who relies upon social interaction to thrive? If so, then you should consider attending an art school, which has a proper campus. However, if you are particularly shy or uneasy in social settings, then perhaps attending an online or virtual university might be best for you.
It is also important that you consider a school’s teaching reputation, before making your choice. You should try to get a copy of a college’s prospectus or visit the art school’s website to get an idea of who the college’s instructor’s are. Where did they earn their degrees? What percentage of the professors or instructors holds the highest degrees in their field? If the website or catalogue has the instructor’s contact details, you may want to consider contacting them with any specific questions that you have about their course or your potential degree programme. It is also important that you note how they reply to your query, because, chances are, that is how they will treat you as a student.
Another important factor to consider when choosing your art school is whether the school or college will provide you with a career placement. In other words, will they be able to help you find a job or an internship, once you have earned your degree or diploma? Many colleges will be happy to help guide you through the employment process once you’ve graduated; don’t be afraid to contact the guidance or career office and ask about any programmes that they offer.
Choosing your school is an important part of the education process and is not a task that should be taken lightly. Remember, learning about your degree programme before you enrol is as important as graduating.
