More and more people are making the decision to earn their art degree by going to art school. But what do admissions committees look for in the successful applicant?
The obvious answer to this question is grades; admissions committees want to be certain that future students will be able to succeed and thrive under academic pressure. Colleges tend to prefer students who have a strong academic background and have performed consistently throughout high school. However, if you are only an average student, don’t worry. Admissions counselors also take other factors into account, like your personal background and your extracurricular activities, like sports or clubs.
But even if you weren’t the All-American student, or are simply a mature student, returning to earn or finish your degree, you can still be considered a strong candidate. Why? Because many art schools will take into consideration other factors besides your grades, like professional experience. For example, if you have worked in an art-related field, your work experience may well give an edge in the admissions process over high school students.
There are many ways that you can improve your chances of acceptance at the art school of your choice. If you are still in high school, it’s never too late to improve your G.P.A. or to get involved in extracurricular programmes or an after school club. Try finding out about volunteer opportunities in your neighbourhood, or get involved in a local civic or religious program. These activities will greatly enhance the quality of your college entrance application and improve your chances of being accepted to your first choice school.
Getting accepted into an art school is challenging, but is certainly not impossible. It doesn’t matter whether you are fresh out of high school or have just decided to finally get that qualification to improve your chances for that promotion at work, there are ways to improve the chances of gaining a place at the art school of your choice.
